As winner of the Sunset Magazine/American Institute of Architects Home Award in 1977-1978, Portola Valley Ranch is a truly unique and wonderful neighborhood, and one of the most beautiful in all of San Mateo County.
Portola Valley Ranch Neighborhood Real Estate Insider
Homes in Portola Valley Ranch are priced between $1,670,000 and $2,145,000 with the median home selling for $1,970,000 in 2006. Originally developed by Joe Whelan in the 1970s, Portola Ranch continues to strive towards preserving the neighborhood’s low key integration with its natural setting. Homes are clustered on cul-de-sacs and separated by green belts. Private pools, fenced-in gardens and sodden lawns are prohibited in favor of plants and trees that are native to the surrounding hillsides. This is a great place to live if you do not enjoy garden chores.
Even the houses themselves are designed to blend in. There are 14 different home models ranging from 2 to 5 bedrooms and exterior paint colors are regulated so homes do not clash with the natural landscaping. Homes are primarily constructed from wood and colored in earth tones, and are inhabited by empty nesters, singles and families. The homes have a timeless modern feel with expansive glass walls, overhangs, high ceilings and multiple decks which enable residents to enjoy the spectacular views of Windy Hill Preserve from both inside and outside of their homes.
Portola Valley Ranch residents also come together to enjoy the surrounding open space. Monthly socials are held at the community ranch house and there are two pools, tennis courts and hiking trails. Hiking groups, community gardens, a family fun committee, book clubs and a community vineyard also serve to bring residents together.
Even though Portola Valley Ranch may appear to be in the country, it is still located only minutes away from Highway 280. Shopping is also available at the nearby Nathhorst Triangle, Village Square and Ladera Shopping Center.
