In 2006, the median home in Central Portola Valley sold for $2,275,000, with prices otherwise ranging from $1,650,000 to $3.2 million. Portola Valley was originally incorporated in 1964, though a few older homes still stand. Recently, many residents have renovated or rebuilt, creating a mix of remodeled ranch homes and an occasional larger home as well. Lot sizes are a minimum of one acre.

Many residents enjoy living in Central Portola Valley because of its rustic, rural feel but without the isolation of living outside city limits. Residents get the best of both worlds, with Little People’s Park (at Portola Valley Town Center) and the Windy Open Space Preserve as well as Ormondale Elementary School and shopping districts at Portola Road and the Valley Center nearby. Highway 280 is minutes away, and many residents work in San Francisco and far flung parts of the Silicon Valley.

Originally, residents in Central Portola Valley lamented over being so far away from town (which used to be downtown Menlo Park or Palo Alto), but through continued development—including the reconstruction of Town Center—few denizens of Central Portola Valley find a need to venture out of town to run errands or find entertainment. With parks, shopping, and a community that always seems to be organizing a barbecue, art show, live theater, a race, or some other event, residents of Central Portola Valley rarely find it hard to keep themselves happy.

Central Portola Valley School Information

Central Portola Valley is served by the outstanding Portola Valley School District and Sequoia Union High School District. Students in grades K – 3 attend Ormandale Elementary, which scores in the mid 900s on the API, before moving on to Corte Madera, which also scores very well on the API. Woodside High shows somewhat lower scores on the API, due to the intermixing of students from other districts. Summit Prep a college prep charter high school is also an option. However, opportunities abound through programs such as the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program, and top-tier students often go on to attend prestigious schools, such as UC Berkley, Stanford University and other top National Universities.

Some families opt to send their students to Woodside Priory School, a private school located on Portola Road minutes away.
