Palo Alto's St. Claire Gardens was originally developed by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco with three- to six- bedroom, two-story homes designed to accommodate large Catholic families. Many of these homes still stand today, including a home on St. Michael Drive that was once a rectory housing nuns.
Today, homes for sale sell from $880,000 to $1.5 million, with the median home selling for $1,175,000 in 2006. Many residents have updated the 1950s tract houses with remodels and renovations, and, occasionally adding a second floor. Indeed, many of the homes are more than meets the eye. St. Claire Gardens is served by El Carmelo and Fairmeadow Elementary Schools, J.L. Stanford Middle School and Gunn High School. As with all schools in the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD), these schools consistently out-perform schools in the CA and the nation. It is not uncommon for students to continue their education at the nearby Stanford University or the prestigious University of California schools. Also, each school in the PAUSD is required to submit an accountability report to the community, which is easily accessible online and offers in-depth information about the schools programs and curricula.
