Southgate Neighborhood —A friendly neighborhood nestled next to Stanford University
Southgate was previously owned by the Stanford family and is located at the southern entrance to Stanford University. The community is awash in neighborly goodwill, as many newcomers are greeted with welcome cards and invitations to make new friends. Aside from the warmth of its residents, Southgate’s greatest asset is its convenient location in proximity to the Caltrain, Churchill Avenue, Park Boulevard and El Camino Real. Children can walk to school and adults can shop, attend sporting events, and reach public transportation all without even starting the car.
Southgate Neighborhood Real Estate Insider
Homes in the Southgate neighborhood in Palo Alto sold for up to $2.6 million in 2006, but also sold for as low as $1.2 million. Many of the homes were built in the 1940s and residents are prone to remodeling and are more likely to expand or add a second story than tear down and rebuild. However, as in all of Palo Alto, strict maximum floor area ratios are maintained to retain the character of the city.
Parents can be at ease knowing that their children are safe, as neighbors keep a watchful eye and through traffic is limited due to restricted access through El Camino and Churchill only. In lieu of a formal organization, an e-mail list has been established in conjunction with a Neighborhood Watch program to keep residents in touch.
Other amenities include Alexander Peers Park, the nearby Main Library and three alleyways between homes that allow pedestrians easy access to the University. Denizens have few complaints, save for an occasional concern over increased traffic and noise from the nearby Palo Alto High School.
Southgate Neighborhood School Information
Excellent schools in Palo Alto are partly responsible for the high cost of living. Southgate is served by Walter Hays and Escondido Elementary Schools (the latter of which offers a Spanish-emersion program) and Jordan Middle School and Palo Alto High School, which is within walking distance of Southgate homes. Parents can drop off toddlers at Escondido Kids’ Club and enroll preschool students at Bambini Montessori School.
