Palo Alto Orchards —Quiet cul-de-sacs in a post-World War II neighborhood formerly covered in fruit orchards
Palo Alto Orchards’ name is the only remnant of the numerous fruit-bearing trees that once occupied this quiet Santa Clara County community in Palo Alto, California. Originally inhabited largely by World War II veterans during the baby boom, this neighborhood retains its family-friendly atmosphere.
Palo Alto Orchards Neighborhood Real Estate Insider
In 2006, median Palo Alto Orchard real estate sold for just under $1 million while nearby condos sold for about half as much. Architecturally, Palo Alto Orchards is quite diverse, with houses ranging from Eichler-style tract homes to updated two-story homes and 1950s cottages. Popularity of Eichler homes is making a comeback in the Santa Clara area. Originally designed as a departure from the template-styled tract homes, Eichlers blur the line between indoors and out, emphasizing natural light with open floor plans and skylights in a design that is quintessentially “California modern.”
Within Palo Alto Orchards, California, the streets are relatively safe. Most of the streets end in cul-de-sacs or dead ends, greatly reducing the amount of through traffic and making the neighborhood safe for pedestrians and children at play.
Concerns have been raised about the dangerous intersection that residents must cross to reach the nearby Juana Briones Park. Residents enjoy visiting the recently renovated 4.1 acre park, though getting to the park from Palo Alto Orchard is a bit awkward, and, potentially dangerous. Residents have to cross the busy Charleston/Arastradero corridor where there is no safe crosswalk for at least a block.
The Palo Alto Orchard Neighborhood association has been lobbying the city to make a safer crosswalk for the intersection for the past couple of years. On top of ensuring safety and addressing landscaping issues, the association also organizes social events, such as block parties, and community-wide holiday celebrations.
