Monro Park Neighborhood —A secluded, affordable neighborhood in southern Palo Alto
Monroe Park is an anomaly in Palo Alto in that it is technically in Palo Alto, but is served by the Los Altos school district and partly lies in Mountain View. This multi-city neighborhood has a unique set of issues regarding schools, recreational programs and proximity to commercial zones and high-density housing. However, because of its seclusion, Monroe Park persists as a pleasant, quiet, safe and neighborly area for young families to live in.
Monroe Park Neighborhood Real Estate Insider
Many homebuyers flock to Monroe Park for its low-priced, quarter-acre lots which are rare in Palo Alto. Homes in 2006 sold for between just under a million to $1.8 million with condos selling around $700,000 on average. Many new residents are building new homes, which contributes to an eclectic look along Monroe Drive, where older styled bungalows sit side-by-side with modern two-story houses. Dwelling types vary in Monroe Park, with million-dollar homes appearing next to 1950s tract homes and even apartment buildings.
Homes en route to the San Antonio Shopping Center experience greater traffic density on their streets, but homes set further back in the cul-de-sacs enjoy quiet seclusion. Neighborliness is one of Monroe Park’s greatest assets, where the community has banded together in order to cope with its fringe status. The community organizes several annual events, such as the 4th of July block party, to promote cohesiveness in Monroe Park.
One drawback of living in Monroe Park is the districting that often bars children from enrolling in certain extracurricular or recreational programs. Parents may run into complications when trying to enroll children in Los Altos programs, such as Girl Scouts troops, due to Monroe Park technically being in Palo Alto.
Other concerns include the constant rezoning and development of commercial zones and apartments on El Camino. However, most residents claim they are unaffected by ongoing construction. In fact, many residents find that proximity to buses, grocery stores and shopping centers is a great convenience.
Monroe Park Neighborhood School Information
Because Monroe Park is situated closer to Los Altos schools than Palo Alto schools, Monroe Park students attend Los Altos Schools, including Santa Rita School, Egan Junior High School, Mountain-View Los Altos Union High School and Los Altos High School. Los Altos Schools generally score very well, rating in the upper 900s on the API.
