Castro City Neighborhood —An isolated community filled with quaint cottages and a rich historical heritage
Castro City has a layered history, beginning as a Spanish rancho owned by Mariano Castro and family and then named “University Park” with hopes of becoming a village for professors but eventually becoming an affordable area for immigrant cannery workers and farmers. Today, Castro City is an “up-and-coming” neighborhood, where many new homes for sale are being built beneath gracious old oak trees.
Castro City Neighborhood Real Estate Insider
Due to the recent influx of new families and construction of new homes, home prices in Castro City are climbing. Blocks that were once predominately tiny cottages on 25-foot wide lots are now dotted with two-story homes that are almost too big for their lots. Home prices in 2006 ranged from $580,00 to $981,000 with the median home selling for $800,000.
This change in Castro City is largely in response to a showdown with the city council in the 1960s. Once called “the disgrace of Mountain View, CA” because of some of the substandard homes in the neighborhood, the city proposed to bulldoze the entire neighborhood and construct modern apartments. The residents of Castro City fought hard, though, and instead were allowed to remain, with the stipulation that certain homes deemed substandard would have to be torn down.
Nearby shopping is available at Mi Pueblo grocery, and outstanding ethnic grocery store. Rengstroff Park and recreation center lies in the lot where the old Castro Mansion once stood.
