Rancho Neighborhood —A conveniently located neighborhood with a small-town feel
Developed concurrently with the Rancho Shopping Center, Rancho, Los Altos used to be lush Santa Clara County farmland where world class plums, cherries, walnuts, peaches, and apricots were grown. Today, homes have taken over and many pleased young families and original owners call it their home. Located roughly between Covington Road and the Foothill Expressway, Rancho is a convenient and quaint place to settle in.
Rancho Neighborhood Real Estate Insider
Once predominately one story homes with board-and-batten siding with occasional bricks, dovecote details on garages, wooden shutters, and low-hanging shake roof lines, many homeowners have opted to remodel and expand their Los Altos homes. Newer homes are often remodeled in Mediterranean styles, and currently hot Craftsman or Prairie style. Los Altos homes within the neighborhood now range from $1,225,000 to $4 million with the median home in 2006 selling for $1.5 million.
Lots are usually around a quarter of an acre, though some Los Altos homes within the neighborhood push the physical limits with their renovations. Several neighbors support a limitation on home sizes, as so-called “:monster homes” that are too large for their lots have been threatening the character of the community.
Los Altos boasts streets with no sidewalks or streetlights, to maintain the countrified feel of the community. Traffic concerns are increasing, as more families move in and motorists occasionally use the neighborhoods streets as a shortcut from Hwy 280 to El Camino Real in Mountain View CA.
Amenities nearby include, of course, the Rancho Shopping Center, as well as Loyola Corners and downtown Los Altos shopping districts.
Ranch Neighborhood School Information
Rancho falls into the Los Altos School District, where students attend Springer, Loyola and Covington Elementary Schools, Blach Intermediate School and then either Los Altos or Mountain View High School. The Los Altos School District scores very well on the API, on average, but tends to drop off a bit at the high school level, due to a more diverse intermixing of students.
